                                                   Shop Safety Rules
Due to the rotating equipment (saws, grinders), hot wax and other hazards present at the ELC shop.
personal safety and safety of others is paramount importance.
 1) Long hair has to be tied back so it does not get caught in moving equipment.
2) loose clothing, loose apron strings, and dangling jewellery (necklaces or bracelets should be avoided or at least removed (tied Up) before operating equipment.
3) It is VERY important that all lapidary material set in saw vises are properly and securely seated and 
clamped in the vise. Never put round rock or rock into the saw that will not fit properly in a 
square vise without using the proper egg clamp.
4) Hot doping wax is used to stick cabs onto dop sticks. This wax will burn if dtripped on exposed skin.
Be careful when using this wax/ Always have cold water available to cool the wax. Always dop
your cab, never hold them with your fingers as you can cut yourself on the sanding drums an wear
down your finger nails and skin. If in doubt of how to use the doping wax seek guidance from the shop
coordinator and/or shop helpers.
5 )Never run the expanding arbors without a sanding belt mounted on them.
6) Except when clearly marked USE DRY,  when using any grinder and sander arbors to remember to
always use water help the cab and prevent damage to the belts and diamond wheels.
7) All the club saws use lubricant to assist in cutting materials. Never cut without either oil or Cool
Lube. Always check before cutting that there is coolant "splash" when the saws are running.
8) Always cut appropriate lapidary materials, no cutting of material that produces toxic dust like
Malachite or abalone shells, no cutting of sapphires or rubies or nickel iron meteorites.
9) Personal Protective Equipment is required, Eye Protection is mandatory, and  Hearing Protection is
strongly recommended, for all members.
10) Always assist in cleaning up equipment at the end of the shop session.
Most important be aware of what others are doing and if you see a safety situation about to develop
notify the shop coordinator of shop helper
